Mütiilation – Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul carries collapse from the first minute. Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul does not merely describe ruin. It sounds ruined from within. That is why it still matters. Too many later records treated despair as image.
The album works through reduction, but not the elegant kind. Repetition narrows the space. Primitive production removes comfort. Meyhna’ch’s voice does not sit above the material like commentary. Instead, it rots inside the riffs and drags the whole recording further into itself. Because of that, the atmosphere never feels added on. It feels structural.
There is very little relief anywhere on the record. The guitars circle. The mood thickens. The sense of isolation keeps increasing, even when nothing dramatic happens on the surface. That is part of the achievement. The release does not need theatrical peaks in order to wound. It keeps pressing in the same direction until the listener stops resisting and starts sinking with it.
A large part of depressive and raw black metal would later borrow from this language. The illness, the voice, the pacing, the fixation on repetition, the refusal of brightness. However, influence alone is not the point. Most imitators only captured fragments. Very few kept the pressure. Very few preserved the feeling that the music was decaying while it played.
This is one of the records that made the Les Légions Noires shadow feel permanent. Not because it was louder or more technical than everything around it, but because it sounded terminal. Even now, it remains intimate, nihilistic and hostile in a way that newer records rarely reach without sounding staged.
Drakkar Productions returned it to circulation in the correct form. The album stays direct, severe, and materially satisfying. At the same time, the remastering does not erase the sickness that made the original necessary.
Mütiilation belongs in the foundation, not on the margins. This is source material.
